This is a preliminary overview of the GSMA Intelligence dataset for smartphone usage by operating system (OS). The Android OS accounts for the highest share of smartphone usage, at around 80% of active connections. due to its wide availability across different devices and price ranges. iOS accounts for a 17% share, limited by its presence only in Apple's own premium smartphones.

Android's prevalence is expected to continue due to its wide range of cost-effective devices in emerging markets in particular, as well as a preference among consumers for Android brands in certain higher income markets.

The data presents share of smartphone usage by OS globally and for seven regions around the world.
