Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) technology has been available for more than 10 years, but its relevance has grown of late. The arrival of 5G is increasing commercial pressure on operators to retire 2G and 3G networks, refarm spectrum and use more efficient technologies. Network shutdowns and 5G deployments are expected to boost the pace of VoLTE launches over the next few years. This should drive VoLTE customer adoption and data traffic.

This analysis examines the latest GSMA Intelligence forecasts for VoLTE adoption. The VoLTE forecast also includes VoNR (or voice over 5G). Although there is strong momentum behind VoLTE, the global picture masks differences between and within regions.
